This amazing plant has become one of our most popular perennials. Some call it the firecracker plant. The blooms are astounding. Brilliant red, slender trumpet-shaped with a vivid yellow, star-shaped top and throat. Compact plant with dark green foliage. Blooms almost all summer beginning towards the end of June. White Fleece-Flower

A non-spreading variety that blooms almost continuously all summer. Big, bushy upright plant with large, fluffy, creamy-white flower plumes from late May until late August. Followed by ornamental, golden seed heads. Grows 4-6' tall but no staking is required. Very sturdy stalks. This an outstanding garden subject. Can be grown in full sun and also considerable shade, in ordinary garden soil. Carefree and low-maintenance. Highly recommended.

Gorgeous tall spires sporting deep fuschia-pink blooms with a dramatic black bee. Sure to make an impressive showing in your garden.

New Millenium Hybrids were developed in New Zealand to produce stronger stalks and more intensely coloured blooms. They are considered to be longer lived and more tolerant of heat and humidity. I grow these in my garden and have found them to be stronger and tougher but they still do require staking. (6-8')

Perennial Sweet William

Zone 4 - 9 (likely hardier)

This variety of Sweet William is unlike any other which are all biennials. This is a true, long lived perennial discovered and test for 15 years by Plant Delights Nursery, Inc. in the United States. It has fabulous brilliant red-black carnation-like blooms from spring and throughout the summer. Deadhead for continuous blooms. Once gardeners discover this plant it will sure to be in high demand. Best grown in a sunny, well-drained location. I grew this in the garden last summer and it was amazing. It grew into a huge clump very quickly and rebloomed several times throughout the summer. NOTE: Do protect from winter wet which it hates! (12-16")

Bergamot, Bee Balm

This is an outstanding new introduction with large, very fragrant, true royal purple flowers produced in great profusion throughout July and August. Excellent sturdy, upright form and mildew resistant. (32")

Jewel of the mid-summer garden. Large heads of tubular flowers atop upright stems. Blooms for weeks and weeks mid-to-late summer. Always alive with bees and butterflies and frequently visited by hummingbirds. Bee Balm is wonderfully aromatic and its leaves and flowers can be used to make tea. Very easily grown in sun to partial shade in average soil. Deep watering and good air circulation are important to preventing mildew in these plants.

Sweet Autumn Clematis

This is my favourite Clematis. Very vigorous climber. Smothered with hundreds of fragrant, small white flowers from August until frost. Ornamental seed heads throughout the winter. Very easy. Just prune to tidy this plant in the early spring.

Burgundy Blanket Flower

Zone 3 - 9

'Suns' of red hot, orange-red blooms float over mounding green foliage. Will flower from May until September (or even longer!) -- particularly if deadheaded. A great and very vivid new introduction from Terra Nova. Easy to grow in a sunny, well-drained location. Tolerant of poor soil and hot summer conditions. This is a more compact strain. (10-12")

Rose Mallow

Zone 4 - 9

This is a large, shrub-like plant producing huge, saucer-shaped flowers in deep, vivid red. The foliage is dark, violet-purple turning fiery red in the fall. Definitely a WOW! perennials. (4-5')

Plant in a hot, sunny location as it requires lots of good summer heat to bloom well. Usually will flower later in the summer and into the fall. A few important facts to remember. This is a true perennial, not a woody shrub. In the spring cut it back to the ground. Rose Mallow will not show any sign of life in the spring until the ground has heated up. In some areas and depending on the weather this might not be until well into June. Don't give up too soon. This plant will develop a large tap root system and it absolutely hates to be moved. Rose Mallow is very tolerant of heat and humidity. Spectacular and generally easy and carefree. Does not need staking.
