The Butterfly Bush is one of the best garden ornamentals to attract butterflies. Also much loved by hummingbirds and bees. 'Black Knight' forms a large, vase shaped bush growing up to 7' tall. It has gorgeous burgundy-red flower cones resembling a lilac bloom turned on its side. Blooms late summer and early fall. Vanilla fragrance. In colder climates, 'Black Knight' acts like a sub-shrub -- its root systems overwinter but most of the upper bush does not. In early spring cut it back to 8-12" from the ground to encourage new growth. Can be very late to leaf out in the spring. Sometimes ours do not show any signs of life until June! Do not give up on the plant prematurely. Best in sun to part shade in moist, well-drained soil.
