Salvia nemorosa 'May Night'

Salvia nemorosa 'May Night'

May Night

Zone 3 - 9

1997 Perennial Plant of the Year

This is a gorgeous ornamental with dense, deep, indigo-blue flower spikes from mid-summer and onwards. If deadheaded, it will frequently re-bloom in the fall. It is a compact plant growing to about 24" tall and hardy from Zone 3 to 9. ' May Night' is an excellent choice for the summer border or for mass-planting. Combine it with a Coreopsis such as 'Sunray' or 'Golden Showers' to create a dazzling display.

'May Night' like most Salvia, prefers a sunny situation and well-drained, ordinary, garden soil. It is an excellent perennial for cutting and is attractive to bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. It's pebbly foliage is also lightly aromatic.

At Canning Perennials this is still a very popular perennial. It is showy, easy to grow, long flowering and consistent from year to year. If you are looking for a newer Salvia try 'Caradonna'.

Linum perenne

Linum perenne

Blue Flax

Zone 5 - 9

With all the new plants coming out over the years this tried and true perennial is sometimes overlooked. After all these decades it is still an excellent garden subject. One of the few perennials that produces true blue flowers -- not lavender, mauve or purple. Single, sky-blue flowers are carried at the tip of delicate, slender, swaying stalks. Flowers open in the morning when it is sunny and close under clouds. Delicate, feathery foliage. Very charming. Easy to grow in a sunny, well-drained location. (15-20")

Perennial Plant of the Year 2015

A low growing, compact Cranesbill with showy, large white blooms that are flushed with pink. Flowers most profusely in early summer but will rebloom throughout the season. For sun to part shade in moist, well-drained soil. This tough perennials is also quite tolerant of less than ideal conditions. Once established it is drought tolerant. Also performs well in the shade. A slow spreader useful as edging, in the rockery or as groundcover. Also makes a great container plant. Wonderfully fragrant foliage. I grow this in a shady, dry spot and it has done very well there. Red fall foliage. This is a very versatile plant. HEIGHT: 20-25 cm SPREAD: 30-45 cm

General Information Cranesbill Geraniums

These hardy, perennial Geraniums are not to be confused with the common bedding geraniums which are more properly called Pelargonium. Cranesbill Geraniums are hardy, long-lived, long-flowering and generally very easy-to-grow perennials. These are tough, low maintenance plants, free from pests and disease. There are quite a large variety of Cranesbills available -- something for virtually every garden situation including deep shade. Some of the most popular in recent years are the smaller varieties which are less than 12" high. They are perfect for a smaller garden, the rockery or even in a container. If you are developing a balcony garden these little gems are perfect.

There are also many mid-sized to large varieties, very suitable for the border. Some varieties such as Geranium sanguineum can even be used as a groundcover.

No matter which varieties you may grow its hard not to fall in love with these durable and very dependable perennials.

Most varieties of Geranium are also very attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies.
