Salvia nemorosa 'May Night'

Salvia nemorosa 'May Night'

May Night

Zone 3 - 9

1997 Perennial Plant of the Year

This is a gorgeous ornamental with dense, deep, indigo-blue flower spikes from mid-summer and onwards. If deadheaded, it will frequently re-bloom in the fall. It is a compact plant growing to about 24" tall and hardy from Zone 3 to 9. ' May Night' is an excellent choice for the summer border or for mass-planting. Combine it with a Coreopsis such as 'Sunray' or 'Golden Showers' to create a dazzling display.

'May Night' like most Salvia, prefers a sunny situation and well-drained, ordinary, garden soil. It is an excellent perennial for cutting and is attractive to bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. It's pebbly foliage is also lightly aromatic.

At Canning Perennials this is still a very popular perennial. It is showy, easy to grow, long flowering and consistent from year to year. If you are looking for a newer Salvia try 'Caradonna'.

Gillenia trifoliata 'Pink Profusion'

Gillenia trifoliata 'Pink Profusion'

Pink Bowman's Root, Indian Psychic

Zone 4 - 8

A lovely perennial rarely offered -- particularly this pink form which is the result of a propogation breakthrough. Produces masses of lacy clear pink blooms that tremble and shimmer in the slightest breeze. Highly ornamental. Stems are deep red and the foliage is also flushed with red. Foliage turns a deep bronzy-red in the fall. Unique seedheads persist well into the winter. An easy to grow perennial with 3 season interest. Prefers a partially shaded location. (24-30")

Lavandula angustifolia 'Ellagance Purple'

Lavandula angustifolia 'Ellagance Purple'

English Lavander

Zone 5 - 9

Uniform, compact shrub with gray-green scented foliage. Produces masses of fragrant, deep-purple flowerspikes (4-5cm long) on sturdy stems. Long flowering from June to August. HEIGHT: 25-30 cm SPREAD: 25-30 cm

Lavandula angustifolia prefers average to dry, well-drained soil in full sun. Excess winter moisture may cause stem rot. Hot, humid summers may cause leaves to blacken and plant to deteriorate. Prune flower stalks to encourage more blooms. In spring, prune plants to desired size or to the old woody stems, to promote vigourous growth and keep a dense, compact habit. Please note that lavenders should never be pruned harder than half way down the stems. Because of its strong scent, plants can be added throughout the garden to deter insects. In mild climates lavenders remains evergreen.

Delphinium New Millenium - Purple Passion

Delphinium New Millenium - Purple Passion

Zn 3 - 9

Definitely a WOW plant. Tall spires of ruffled, deep purple blooms with a dramatic white bee.

New Millenium Hybrids were developed in New Zealand to produce stronger stalks and more intensely coloured blooms. They are considered to be longer lived and more tolerant of heat and humidity. I grow these in my garden and have found them to be stronger and tougher but they still do require staking. (6-8')

Delphiniums are much loved by the new gardener and the connoisseur alike. Their spires of brilliant blooms are also frequently visited by hummingbirds and butterflies. They also produce a great cut flower. Delphiniums are best grown in full sun, in moist, well-drained, fertile soil. During the blooming period fertilize regularly with a good perennial food to help feed and maintain the plant. Delphiniums will generally begin to bloom in early summer and may continue for up to 4 weeks. If they are cut back after flowering they may bloom again later in the summer.

Delphiunium are poisonous and usually are not bothered by deer or rabbits.
