Perennial Sweet William

Zone 4 - 9 (likely hardier)

This variety of Sweet William is unlike any other which are all biennials. This is a true, long lived perennial discovered and test for 15 years by Plant Delights Nursery, Inc. in the United States. It has fabulous brilliant red-black carnation-like blooms from spring and throughout the summer. Deadhead for continuous blooms. Once gardeners discover this plant it will sure to be in high demand. Best grown in a sunny, well-drained location. I grew this in the garden last summer and it was amazing. It grew into a huge clump very quickly and rebloomed several times throughout the summer. NOTE: Do protect from winter wet which it hates! (12-16")

Climbing Sweet Pea Vine

Zone 3 - 9

Old fashioned, showy climber for fences, trellis or as a sprawling groundcover. Easy to grow in sun to partial shade, in ordinary garden soil. A good perennial for naturalizing. Not far from our home, someone has encouraged masses of Sweet Pea to grow wild in a roadside ditch. Looks great! Lovely carmine, rose, light pink and white pea-like blooms all summer and into the fall. This is a herbaceous perennial which will die back completely to the ground after hard frost. (8-10')

Delphinium New Millenium - Blue Lace

Delphinium New Millenium - Blue Lace

Zone 3 - 9

Tall spires of the deepest sky blue tinged with pink.

New Millenium Hybrids were developed in New Zealand to produce stronger stalks and more intensely coloured blooms. They are considered to be longer lived and more tolerant of heat and humidity. I grow these in my garden and have found them to be stronger and tougher but they still do require staking. (6-8')

Delphiniums are much loved by the new gardener and the connoisseur alike. Their spires of brilliant blooms are also frequently visited by hummingbirds and butterflies. They also produce a great cut flower. Delphiniums are best grown in full sun, in moist, well-drained, fertile soil. During the blooming period fertilize regularly with a good perennial food to help feed and maintain the plant. Delphiniums will generally begin to bloom in early summer and may continue for up to 4 weeks. If they are cut back after flowering they may bloom again later in the summer.

Delphiunium are poisonous and usually are not bothered by deer or rabbits.

Heuchera 'Little Cutie Sugar Berry'

Heuchera 'Little Cutie Sugar Berry'

Coral Bells

Zone 4 - 9

Definitely a very yummy ornamental. This little miniature has vivid, berry-violet, maple-leaf like foliage with pronounced dark veins. Set with spikes bearing clusters of pale pink bellflowers from spring until fall. Very showy and unique. Great for containers, the rock garden or border. Combine it with other 'Cuties' to create your own fairy garden. Can be grown in sun or shade. A new introduction from Terra Nova. (6-10")

General Information

Extensive breeding has created a fabulous range of ornamental, even exotic foliage. These new varieties are best grown in a cooler, partially shaded location away from the blazing afternoon sun. Generally Coral Bells are very easy to grow provided they have reasonably fertile, well-drained soil. These are low maintenance perennials, free from pests and disease, that virtually always look very neat and tidy. Most varieties will begin to lose some of their vigour after 3-4 years and will need to be divided. Tiny, coral bell blooms are very attractive to hummingbirds and they also make a good cut flower. A great perennial for the beginner and the collector.
