Salvia nemorosa 'May Night'

Salvia nemorosa 'May Night'

May Night

Zone 3 - 9

1997 Perennial Plant of the Year

This is a gorgeous ornamental with dense, deep, indigo-blue flower spikes from mid-summer and onwards. If deadheaded, it will frequently re-bloom in the fall. It is a compact plant growing to about 24" tall and hardy from Zone 3 to 9. ' May Night' is an excellent choice for the summer border or for mass-planting. Combine it with a Coreopsis such as 'Sunray' or 'Golden Showers' to create a dazzling display.

'May Night' like most Salvia, prefers a sunny situation and well-drained, ordinary, garden soil. It is an excellent perennial for cutting and is attractive to bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. It's pebbly foliage is also lightly aromatic.

At Canning Perennials this is still a very popular perennial. It is showy, easy to grow, long flowering and consistent from year to year. If you are looking for a newer Salvia try 'Caradonna'. I have to admit this has become a favourite.

Vernonia lettermanii 'Iron Butterfly'

Vernonia lettermanii 'Iron Butterfly'

Narrow-leaf Ironweed

Zn 4 - 9

This is a more compact version of the traditional native wildflower. It is a bushy plant with narrow, feathery leaves and produces masses of large, rosy-red, umbel-like flower heads in late summer to early fall, followed by purple seed heads. Wonderful with ornamental grasses. Easily grown in sun to part shade in ordinary garden soil. Like the taller version it is loved by butterflies. (30-36")

Echinacea 'Sombrero Flamenco Orange'

Echinacea 'Sombrero Flamenco Orange'

Coneflower

Zone 4 - 9

New from Darwin Perennials. Upright, well branched and compact plant set with masses of rich, deep orange coneflowers from June through September. Vigorous and quite hardy.

Easily grown average to moist, well drained soils in full sun to part shade. Quite drought tolerant once established. Very adaptable to heat and poor soils. Taller cultivars may grow leggy and require staking if grown in dense shade. Regular deadheading is recommended but not necessary to increase bloom time. It just improves general plant appearance. Heuchera 'Georgia Peach'

Heuchera 'Georgia Peach'

Coral Bells

Zone 4 - 9

From Terra Nova comes this amazing peach of a plant. It has huge, gently lobed, peach coloured leaves which are overlaid with white. Foliage colour changes with the seasons. Peachy orange in spring. Peachy pink in summer and rose purple in the fall. Creamy white flowers mid-summer. Positively yummy! (14")

General Information

Extensive breeding has created a fabulous range of ornamental, even exotic foliage. These new varieties are best grown in a cooler, partially shaded location away from the blazing afternoon sun. Generally Coral Bells are very easy to grow provided they have reasonably fertile, well-drained soil. These are low maintenance perennials, free from pests and disease, that virtually always look very neat and tidy. Most varieties will begin to lose some of their vigour after 3-4 years and will need to be divided. Tiny, coral bell blooms are very attractive to hummingbirds and they also make a good cut flower. A great perennial for the beginner and the collector.
